1920s style speakeasy cocktail bar: Engel Bar and terrace, The Royal Exchange in The City of London

ENGEL BAR

Celebrating the hedonism, style and flamboyance of 1920s Berlin, everything about Engel cocktail bar brings the sips and sounds of a bygone era back to life in the City of London. Nestled on the north mezzanine – surrounded by its famous murals – and out on the terrace of the Grade I Listed Royal Exchange, with a luxurious design by Karen Taylor of Pattern Haus, Engel is open all day.

Engel’s drinks menu combines imaginative riffs on vintage classics with modern theatrical cocktails, with the team taking inspiration from the revolutionary characters, movements and flavours which marked the decade.
A food menu rooted in German and Austrian tradition is served from noon until late, including dishes designed with a quick City lunch in mind or as evening treats with drinks. Engel is open from Monday to Friday between 10am and 11pm and for Champagne Brunch on Saturdays from 11:30am until 11pm.

Jose Ubero, General Manager

Jose is the General Manager of both Engel Bar and sister restaurant Jang. Jose has seen it all, from mastering the art of mixology, to moving into a managerial role across a range of high-profile restaurants throughout London during his 14 years’ experience at D&D London.

When heads are turned, catch him sipping on Der Blaue Engel from our menu, and in his down time spending time with family and friends and playing sports – football being a particular favourite (well he is Spanish…).

Outdoor drinking & dining

We are very proud of our terrace bar, right by Bank station in the City of London. Open in the summer months, it’s perfect for al fresco drinks, lunch, dinner or perhaps a quick cappuccino, we think the Engel terrace has one of the best views in the capital.
